Osteopathy is effective in treating a whole range of musculo-skeletal complaints.

This includes acute, chronic and arthritic conditions. Some of the more common problems treated are listed below.

Have I got a ‘Frozen Shoulder’?

Frozen Shoulder, also called Adhesive Capsulitis, is a painful condition. It results in a severe loss of motion in the shoulder. It may follow an injury, or it may arise gradually with no injury or warning and most commonly affects patients between the ages of 40 to 60 years old, and it is twice as common in women as in men. In frozen shoulder, inflammation in the joint makes the normally loose parts of the joint capsule stick together.

What is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo?

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is a very common condition. It causes brief episodes of a sensation of everything around you spinning which is called rotary vertigo. This happens when you put your head in certain positions. Typically this is when you lie down, turn over in bed, get out of bed, look up or down or under something. The spinning sensation usually lasts for only a few seconds and certainly less than a minute.

Headaches

The World Health Organisation recently reported that 4 per cent of adults have headache-related disorders with an estimated 190 million days lost from work in the EU alone because of migraine. Migraine leaves 90 per cent of sufferers unable to perform even the most simple of tasks, disrupting work and family life.

Lower Back-pain & sciatica

Many things can happen to the low back to cause pain. Joints sprains, pulled muscles, damaged discs and strained ligaments to name but a few. The important thing to remember is that although low back problems can leave you in agonising pain, it doesn’t mean you’ve injured yourself terribly. Most low back problems are minor, and despite being extremely painful they are often very treatable!

Neck & Shoulder pain

If you have ever experienced neck or shoulder pain, you will know how it can disrupt everyday activities. Pain in these areas is usually caused by damage to the soft tissues – the muscles, ligaments and tendons. Neck pain and sometimes shoulder pain, can also be caused when the neck joints become irritated.

Tennis & Golfers Elbow

Tennis elbow occurs when there is damage to the muscles, tendons and ligaments around the elbow joint and forearm. Small tears, called micro tears, form in the tendons and muscles which control the movement of the forearm. They cause a restriction of movement, inflammation and pain. Tennis elbow does not only affect tennis players who of course frequently strain the muscles in this area. It is also caused by other sports and by work or hobbies that involve repetitive movements.

Osteopathy & Pregnancy

Some expectant mothers experience aches and pains throughout (and sometimes after) their pregnancy, but stoically put up with it thinking it is normal.

It’s important to remember pregnancy is not a disease! There is quite often an answer to the symptoms of pain and discomfort you may be experiencing. Osteopathy is a safe and effective way of treating symptoms throughout pregnancy as we can modify our techniques to whatever stage you’re at.
